Monday, Monday, so good to me...

Mornin', all - today we present our games in class. I think all the teams have done really well - especially for our first efforts. All of the games are damn cool. As for ours, D'oh-nut Defense! is now pretty much complete - we even have splash screens for the introduction and the player's inevitable victory or defeat. I'm looking forward to the presentations in class, especially seeing our teacher's reaction to one of the games in which he's the antagonist (they scanned a picture of him in and transferred it as a texture onto a model). That one's sort of like Super Punch-Out! - even has the music from the game, though it's got Mortal Kombat sound effects (Toasty!).

Also, I think I'm addicted to Civilization 4. Watching the numberless tanks of my Grecian empire roll across Washington's pitiful forces is a joy to behold (thanks to Luke for the tip to play that civilization, by the way). It's got an endlessly entertaining "just one more turn" mentality. I loves it good. Also also, D&D is coming up this weekend again in Sarasota - should be fun! Speaking of D&D, if you haven't seen this video yet, you should check it out, since it's absolutely hilarious. Actually, since I also mentioned videogames in this post, you should also check out this video, too. It's shorter than the former one, and just as funny (if not more so). My production design teacher actually showed it to me. Good to watch if you love or hate videogames!

That's that - hope you all have an excellent day!

The third is a sumo wrestling game with trolls, and while it's probably the most technically advanced one out of all the games (in terms of animation and depth of gameplay) it's just not as funny - hence, it gets left out. Poor trolls.

That sounds reasonably funny to me.

Then again, AEON corporation just wrote to tell me I am shit, so my opinion probably doesn't count.

Well, it was pretty funny when they started their "wrestling" animation, because it is probably the most gay animation I have ever seen in any wrestling game, ever. It was made all the more awesome by the reaction of one of that game's producers, who is somewhat homophobic - he was quite annoyed by his game's gay trolls... especially when they showcased it in class, and everybody laughed, because we'd just been talking about cavity searches directly beforehand.

...the cavity searches, by the way, came up in relation to the mention of Nondisclosure Agreements - it's not like we had a class presentation focused on cavity searches, or anything.

Ha ha. Cavity searches. Ew.

Yeah... they're hilarious - until you actually stop to think about 'em.

If it weren't so awesome, it might be easier to avoid thinking about it when I should be doing other important things, like paying attention in class, answering the teachers' questions, driving, sleeping, etc...

Did you ever get the Gradius link I sent you? It was kinda neat (though not funny like the things in your post).

Yeah! It was neat - I thought I'd mentioned that I'd seen it to you. Ah, well - thanks for sending it my way!

Yeah, that 'just one more turn' mentality... I was musing on the addictive quality of some games like Strange Adventures in Infinite Space. I'm actually considering purchasing the follow-on, Weird Worlds - the games are supposed to take just 10-30 minutes to play through, but they have this curious popcorn-like quality where you just do one after another after another...

Wonder how that quality works? Fast turnaround time and giving the player interesting decisions has to rank highly.

I've heard good things about those games you mentioned.

Indeed, that addictive aspect of games is something we've been learning about, particularly just how hard it is to plan for it. Giving a player a multitude of options and possibilities isn't the solution, because things can get too complex... but you want them to feel like they've got lots to do, and that there's are tons of chances for them to see and do cool things right around the next corner. So... you can't give them too much, lest they get frustrated - or worse, bored - but you want them to feel like they can do a lot and that they're in control. Yikes.

Greece? I don't recall recommending Greece, although come to look at 'em, that's not bad. Or did you mean Persia? In any event, good stuff. Both videos - very funny.
I'd like to see some of these projects after they're turned in? Can you show them to friends, or does EA devour them wholesale and retain their intellectual property in its mammoth belly?

Persia, that's it! Yes, Persia. I keep associating Cyrus with the Greeks, for some reason. And yes, they're our projects, we can show 'em to whomever we please. Also, though EA is affiliated with FIEA, it's not like we answer to them at all. We're not beholden to their monstrous wiles; we can do what we like, and whatever we create is ours!

That's madness! Your ideas remain yours?! What strange new world is this?
Also, everybody should love Persia. I also recommend Kublah Khan - although horse archer is a poor choice of unit to buff up, aggressive and cultural might be right up your alley if you're looking for a change of pace from Cyrus (who is my home-boy). Also, you can cry out things like "Khaaaaaaaan!" and be from Mongolia. Outer Mongolia, in fact. It's not a bad deal, all in all.
